Best Time to Travel to Fiji

Many people travel to Fiji every year, with Australia, New Zealand, and the USA providing most of its tourism. But when is the best time to travel to Fiji, avoid the floods of other tourists and yet take advantage of its gorgeous climate?

The best time to visit Fiji really comes down to your preference. There are two main factors to consider in determining the best time to visit and that is the weather and your budget. Needless to say the most desirable weather periods are also the most in demand and therefore the most expensive.

The dry season is May to October (also known as the Fijian winter) is often seen as the best time to travel as there is no rain and therefore no cyclones (always a plus). The temperature during this time is hardly what we would call typical ‘winter’ with average days between 26-30 degrees Celsius. This period is perfect for the beach and making the most out of the island. The only down side is that it is a very popular time of the year and therefore you will need to book in advance, pay peak rates and share the islands with many more people.

The wet season is from November to April (Fijian Summer). The temperate during this period is very similar to the dry season, just a few degrees warmer on average. For the bargain hunters this can be a good time to go as many other travellers choose to go in the dry season, therefore being able to pick up some cheap flights and hotel deals. But before you eagerly book your trip for this season you need to be aware that you can expect heavy down poor of tropical rain, but also often breaks of pure sunshine bliss. Because it is never cold in Fiji, many can find the tropical rain enjoyable however it does limit your ability to schedule other activities like going to the beach. The other factor is that this is hurricane season, how likely it is that there will be one is near impossible to say yet in good hotels you can be sure that they have a good understanding of how to manage these situations should they arise.

It’s important to remember that Fiji is in the southern hemisphere. As such, the warmer season runs roughly from November until April, covering what would be the winter months in the Northern hemisphere. This means travelling during what some consider summer may be cheaper for you. Fortunately, Fiji has a tropical marine climate and experiences very minimal extremes. You will find the temperature doesn’t vary as much as it does closer to the ice caps.

Another way to avoid high-tourism areas is by going to some of the less popular islands. Viti Levu is very popular, but Fiji has many islands that are less popular as they are less well-known, and this is where you may find some much-needed solitude as you sunbathe and scuba dive the days away.

Interestingly the level of rainfall varies on the different island, the largest island receives the most rainfall with even higher amounts in the mountain area whereas the small islands receive less rain.

When deciding on the best time for you to go it’s important to think about the activities you would like to do.

Wet Season (Summer): Could suit you if you:

·         Don’t mind or even like tropical rain,

·         Love getting a cheap flight and hotel deals,

·         Can happily stay in the resort chilling while it rains,

·         Don’t want or need a strict schedule that is based on weather conditions,

·         Like snorkelling when the surf is not big and the water is warmer,

·         Are ok with knowing there is a chance of a cyclone,

·         Like having less tourists around.

Dry Season (Winter): Could suit you if you:

·         Want to enjoy the sun (all the time),

·         Freedom to schedule your activities and not limit them to weather conditions,

·         Don’t mind paying a bit extra during peak season,

·         Don’t mind it being the busy season,

·         Enjoy slightly cooler less humid weather.

Whatever you decide, have a fantastic time in Fiji!
