Best time to visit Bali

Finding the best time to go to Bali comes down to your personal preference, some things to consider is the weather, your budget, peak and off peak times and activities, festivals.

Weather

Bali as you know is a tropical destination and therefore thankfully never gets too cold, with average temperatures around 31 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The main seasonal difference in the weather is between the wet season and the dry season.

The Wet Season (November–April)

The wet season is also considered the summer period and as a result is generally hotter and more humid than the dry season. On a typical day in the wet season you could awake to a hot humid day with sunshine and by the afternoon have a torrential downpour of rain. This might not be as bad as you think as by the time the rain comes at can be a welcome relief from the hot temperature of the morning.

On a whole most people going to Bali are not phased about the rain in the wet season as most activities, including swimming at the beach can be done in the rain – (just without the sunbathing).

The Dry Season (May - October)

The dry season is not surprisingly the most popular time to visit Bali as the sun is out, the ocean is calm and there is no rain to be had – making it the typical tropical holiday. There is of course a downside to this, everyone wants to go during this time so it drives up prices and makes everywhere more crowded, which might suit some more than others.

Going to Bali during the dry season gives you peace of mind that you can pretty much do anything you want to do while you’re there and you don’t have to worry about the rain dictating your activities. The dry season is also a bit cooler and less humid than the wet season, making the most idealic and enjoying weather you can imagine.

Weather in the mountains (Ubud)

The weather in the Bali Mountains (Ubud area) is always a bit cooler than the rest of Bali ranging between 21 degrees Celsius and 27 Degrees. So if you prefer a cooler holiday in Bali this is the place to go, you can always do ventures to the beach for your dose of sun and come back to the cool climate in the mountains.

The Bali mountains receive more rainfall than the rest of Bali so if you are in the mountains during the wet season expect much more rain.

Peak Times

July and August are the most popular times to visit Bali, this also coincides with the school holidays in Australia – meaning it is always busy in Bali around this time of the year.  This means flights and accommodation will cost you more.

Christmas and New Year’s Eve is also a popular and therefore peak time to go to Bali.

Off Peak Times

If you want cheap flights and hotel deals then going in the off peak times is the way to go. This usually means going during the raining season and also outside of Australian school holiday periods.

For the cheap deals have a look around March and October periods, give or take a month either side. To get the cheapest deals make sure you book in advance, if you leave it until the last minute it is still possible the get good cheap deals but your best bet is to book in advance, that’s where the best deals are to be found.

Best time for surfing

Surfing can be done in Bali throughout the year however depending on when you go there will be better places to surf during these periods. The best place to go surfing during April to October is the west coast and East Coast is better from November to March.

The dry season is the preferred time to surf as most people prefer surfing when the sun is out rather than in the rain. The downside to this is it also means it is the most crowded time and therefore you will need to compete for the waves.

Activities and Festivals

If you go to Bali during some of these when festivals and activities are on your experience on the beautiful island will be so much richer. Here are some great events in Bali.

New Year’s Eve

If you’ve never had a new year’s eve in Bali it is something else, the place comes alive with such a great spirit shared by locals and tourists alike. A great thing to do is to see the local fireworks launched from the beach at midnight. As you would expect there are numerous events held in Bali for this special night with restaurants, Hotels and bars all offering something.

Negara Bull Races

An activity you probably would not expect in Bali is bull racing, yet between July and October that is exactly what you can expect to see. Bulls and chariots are highly decorated and the jockey is tasked with outperforming other competitors – a fascinating alternative event to be seen in Bali.
