Brisbane

It’s the capital of Queensland where they reckon the weather is beautiful one day and perfect the next. Brisbane is no country backwater. It’s the third largest city in Australia and packed with all the touristy mod cons. There’s no need to leave town as you can find heaps to see and do within the city itself.

Green is one word to describe Brisbane. For all its roads, rail lines and tall buildings, Brisbane has an abundance of parks. Would you believe some 1500 shady, green areas all open to the public? You’ll find it easy to enjoy the magnificent greenery all over town. And there are special spots. The Riverside Botanic Gardens are well worth a stroll and the Brisbane Arbour is amazing. It has a path you can wander while being right in the heart of town. Whatever you find yourself doing in Brisbane, you can always find a quiet park, take a seat and watch the world, a very quiet world, go by.

All for free

The CBD has tourist attractions or destinations including the station, Riverside, Botanic Gardens and the Queen Street Mall. Sure you can walk to all of these places by why not take the free bus? It’s called The Loop and runs around the CBD allowing you to hop on or off whenever you feel like it.

And speaking of free you can take a twice daily guided tour of the Roma Street Parklands where an expert will explain the local modern art, the plants and the points of historical interest. Cost - zilch.

Not interested in politics, fine, but the buildings housing the Queensland parliament are fascinating and their ancient contents - apart from the politicians - are well worth a look. Again you can keep your hand in your pocket. And if you’ve always wanted to know how the police solve mysteries then the Queensland Police Museum will let you in - and out again - revealing all sorts of copper capers. So many of Brisbane’s outstanding buildings are open to the public and the old Customs House is another example. Every Sunday you can enjoy a free music concert.

Out of town

Of course there are places to see quite close to Brisbane and only a short drive south of the city is an area known as the Koala Coast. There is plenty of those delicious eucalypt leaves for all those cuddly koalas and Daisy Hill Koala Centre is a great place to have some serious one-to-one time with several of Australia’s native wildlife.  Heading north for about an hour will bring you to some of the world’s best surf beaches.

Brisbane has great restaurants, plenty of performing arts activities and the beautiful Brisbane River to enjoy as well. Fortitude Valley - the locals call it The Valley - is a great place to shop and be entertained. Brisbane is easy to get around. It’s big without being too big. You’ll never be cold in Brisbane and it’s the type of town you’ll want to return to as there is just so much to do in such a sunny city.
