A guide to Melbourne

Whatever you like there are places to stay in Melbourne that will meet your needs. Below are some areas of Melbourne and what they have to offer.

Melbourne CBD

The CBD is the epicentre of where the action is in Melbourne and to truly appreciate Melbourne one just needs to spend some time in the CBD. Melbourne’s CBD are terraced with ornate old colonial style buildings with many dating back to the gold rush experienced in Melbourne some 100 years ago. These beautiful buildings look like they would be at home in any old grand European city. Adding to this old grandeur is the networks of trams throughout the CBD and metro areas, a great and fun way to get around. Perhaps one of the most fun things to do in Melbourne is simply go for a walk. Follow some laneways and you’ll find bustling pockets of exciting cafes, bars, eateries and many more surprises. Melbourne’s lane ways have a truly unique feel and a treasure-trove of discoveries to be had. The CBD is large by Australian standards however wherever you chose to stay you will not be far from some cafes, bars and restaurants.

North Melbourne – Carlton, Fitzroy, Brunswick and surrounding areas

Another gem in Melbourne’s crown is in the northern areas – if you are staying in the city it’s only a short tram ride away.

Carlton is best known for Lygon street, a bustling lively street lined with dozens of restaurants. Walking down the street you can expect to be approached by eager restaurant staff and barraged by aromas of garlic prawns, pizza, pasta and nearly anything else you can imagine. Lygon street is a great place to spend at least one night, walking around, have a nice meal go to one of Melbourne’s favourite book stores, Readings or even catch a movie. Carlton is the home to Cinema nova, IMAX Melbourne (the 3rd largest screen in the world) and a fun outdoor theatre in the park on Lygon street.

Fitzroy is best known for it’s infamous Brunswick Street, a vibrant exciting street packed with shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and anything else you can think of. You can easily spend a whole day walking Brunswick street going from one interesting place to the next.

Brunswick is Mebournes biggest suburb and just a little bit further north than Carlton. Brunswick has two main streets, Lygon St and Sydney Road. Brunswick has a vibrant multicultural influence from the many Greek, Italian and Middle Eastern people who live there.  It’s no surprise then that the food here is amazing. From authentic delicious middle eastern sweets, to award winning modern Greek restaurants such as the Helenic Republic, owned by Australian celebrity chef George Calombaris. Brunswick is also home to many funky cafes , bars and restaurants that have that distinct Melbourne feel. There’s no shortage of places to check out in Brunswick and if you’re interested in going somewhere that is a bit more ‘edgy’ this will suit you well.

South Melbourne – South Yarra and surrounding areas

South Melbourne is one of Melbourne’s more upmarket areas and yet still has the vibrancy Melbourne is known for.  South Yarra is a short tram ride from the CBD and as the name suggests sits on the southern side of the Yarra river. South Yarra is a beautiful leafy suburb with many historic homes from the art deco period, a relaxing place to stay away from the hussle and bustle of the CBD yet close enough to venture into. The South Yarra shopping area has many fashion boutiques, cafes, bars and restaurants. The infamous Chapel Street starts in South Yarra and goes all the way to the next suburb of Prahan, you have never seen so many fashion shops before in your life than you will here!

East Melbourne

St Kilda is the standout location in East Melbourne. Perched on the ocean (or port phillip bay) is a mecca for the sun and beach lovers. St Kilda has a sea of bars, restaurants and cafes that are loved by many. You can also spend some time walking along the beach where there is an excellent path that runs for many kilometres, a great way to take in the beach life.

West Melbourne

West Melbourne is frequented less by tourists but should not be overlooked. Williamstown is a fantastic area that seems a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You could easily think you are in a small country town when in Williamstown as the pace of life is much slower and there are many large parklands that hug the beach front. Williamstown has some of the best views of Melbourne and is a great way to spend some time relaxing away from the city.
