Darwin

If you fancy a trip to Australia’s Top End and base yourself in Darwin, there are any number of places to stay and as many places to visit.  Darwin the city is laidback and crammed with dozens of different cultures. It’s rarely cold in Darwin and the weather can often be divided into two types - wet and dry. It’s important to get your timing right because during the wet season, some places are difficult if not impossible to get to.

The city itself is surrounded by wildlife. There are parks galore both within the city and then but a short drive away where the natural inhabitants including rare birds and crocodiles are often spectacular to see. If you want a real Australian experience, visiting Darwin and the Northern Territory will give you that in spades. And of course the impact of indigenous Australians is out on show in this part of the world.

Food glorious food

If food and exotic dining experiences take your fancy then Darwin is the place to be. This city has more restaurants per capita than any other Aussie city. Your choice of dining experiences is little short of mouth-watering. The city itself has eateries galore but then so too do the Darwin suburbs and popular areas outside of town such as Cullen Bay and Palmerston.

The National parks with Kakadu and Litchfield in particular are hugely popular with tourists. Darwin is the launching place to get to these areas. But if you want fascinating natural sights and sites then stay in town. Darwin Harbour is a history lesson as far as World War 2 is concerned and you can go fish feeding and watch leaping crocs probably within coo-ee of your downtown hotel.

Do you enjoy walking, cycling, safe swimming and nature? East Point Reserve offers so much and is virtually in a Darwin suburb. There are native Australian animals, BBQ facilities, bicycle and walking paths with a special walking track through a mangrove area. Check the tide times for best access and consider watching an NT sunset from this fabulous location.

DIY or Tour

For many it’s an easy decision but you certainly have the option. Visiting such places as Kakadu and Katherine Gorge are unforgettable experiences. If you enjoy driving and camping then the choice is made. But if you simply want to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds, having an expert guide to answer your questions and bring the Territory to life, then there are many tours from which to choose.

One of the best aspects of Darwin is that so much is available for free. The walks, the views, the scenery and buildings are all easy to access and you’re never far from anything. If you fancy a tour or even a dazzling helicopter trip above this tropical paradise, then everything is available. You won’t need an overcoat because most days are around 30C. But Darwin does enjoy the odd drop of rainfall. Around 1600mm is the norm and the wet season is December to March. There are many words to describe Darwin but boring would never be one of them.
